June First ;; everything begins

Ever since high school, I knew I'd be doing some sort of internship overseas where I'd get the chance to work with Deaf children. I always thought I'd end up doing it in Thailand and I was going to-- up til a few weeks ago. Due to the whole ongoing political protest there, Gallaudet decided it was too dangerous for us to fly out to Bangkok. For a long time I had a mental picture of what it would be like to be there--but all that went out of the window. Instead, we stumbled upon a chance to work at Malaysia, just south of Thailand.

So, I can tell you where I will be on June 1st. I'll be taking a twenty hour plane ride from JFK airport (with a layover in Turkey) towards Kuala Lumpur. I don't really know much of where we'll end up and what we'll do exactly. All I know is that Malaysia is hot. And humid. We'll be working with the Malaysian Federation of the Deaf (MFD) and instead of staying at one school, we'll be moving around. A lot. I've been trying not to research the heck out of this new place but from what I've seen-- it'll be quite an adventure!

As part of my stipend agreement, I have to keep a weekly log in which I discuss challenges I face and new skills acquired during my time there. So I thought: what better way to document my experience than in a blog?
Since I know nothing of where I will be and what I will be doing, I don't know how often I can get on the internet but hopefully often enough to keep this thing alive!
